Why should you visit Fredericksburg during Texas Wine Month?

In our opinion October is an exciting time to visit Fredericksburg and the surrounding wine country. That’s because we like…

  • Oktoberfest events
  • Food & Wine Festival events
  • Cooler temperatures (well potentially; it’s still Texas)
  • Wine Club Parties
  • New wine releases
  • Fall menu drops
  • All the Fall vibes
  • Bustling crowds full of energy

If that list doesn’t appeal to you, then it might not be the best time of year for you to visit Fredericksburg.

Is the Texas Wine Month Passport Worth It?

What is the Texas Wine Month Passport?

Essentially the passport program offers guests a guide to Hill Country wineries they may not have explored otherwise. The 2026 passport runs October 1–31 and currently lists $85 for an individual and $120 for a couple. It includes complimentary tastings at participating wineries, limited to four per day, plus a 10% discount on purchases of three or more bottles.

Should I buy one?

Probably yes if:

  • you’re planning multiple winery visits
  • you enjoy exploring different producers
  • you’re visiting for several days

Maybe not if:

  • you’re only visiting one or two wineries
  • you already have a very specific itinerary
  • your group isn’t particularly interested in wine tastings

Is Fredericksburg Busy During Texas Wine Month? Here’s what to Expect.

Now that we covered some local activities that happen in October, you might be wondering if Fredericksburg in general will be crowded. Short answer, yes.

Historically, October is high season in Fredericksburg and the surrounding Wine Country. If you want a slower pace, consider visiting during the week as the weekends will be the busiest.

Fredericksburg is a small town so accommodations, restaurants, transportation services and wine tours can book up fast so it’s important that you plan ahead if you want a stress-free visit.

How Far Ahead Should You Plan?

Several weeks ahead: Start considering your lodging options, wine tours and or private transportation services. Yes, our area has some ride share options but they can be tricky during these busy times.

2–4 weeks: If you’re making your own winery plans, start securing those tasting reservations now. Become familiar with the wineries you want to visit. See if you need a reservation of if they accept walk-ins. The same goes for restaurants. Not all in our area, in fact some of the best, don’t accept reservations so you might consider planning around long wait times or alternative options.

Do You Private Transportation?

Probably. Unless you have a designated driver then it’s a smart way to enjoy and maximize your wine time responsibly and safely. Not sure? Our Guest Concierge (a real human! not AI!) is here to chat through your options.

How many wineries should you visit?

One of the biggest mistakes we see during Texas Wine Month is trying to turn the passport into a scavenger hunt. More wineries does not automatically mean a better wine day, trust us on this one. With over 13 years of driving guests around, here’s what we’ve observed and experienced:

  • 3 to 4 wineries is the sweet spot; see our reasons why
  • tasting rooms take time, especially if they are crowded
  • driving between wineries takes time as they are spread out
  • lunch matters
  • water matters
  • you don’t want to rush
  • the winery experience is part of the trip

Pro Move: Don’t make a goal to see how many wineries we can cram into a day. It’s to make sure you actually enjoy the wineries you visit.

Don’t Try to Visit Every “Best Winery”

Not every winery is the same. They all have their own personalities, much like yourselves. With so many wineries in our region, choosing which wineries to visit can be a challenge. That’s where our insight can come in handy. Here are the factors we consider in our planning process:

  • why are you visiting? to celebrate? explore? be together?
  • what types of wines do you like to drink?
  • what type of atmosphere do you enjoy?
  • do you want to include lunch along the way?
  • are you interested in learning or just want to relax?
  • are you looking for small-production winemakers?
  • do you want to see the most popular wineries or the best hidden gems?

Considering those factors into matching which wineries fit you best is crucial so you’re not wasting your limited time at places you won’t enjoy. This is another reason why leaning on local experts, like Cellar Rat, can really take your trip from being good to unforgettable.

What are the best Texas Wine Month events in Fredericksburg in 2026?

We’re not the biggest fans of “Best” Lists because we’re all different and every visit you make could be for a different reason. So here’s some local events we personally dig that happen here in Fredericksburg during October.

Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival

This food and wine event takes place the weekend of October 22–25 but we recommend getting your tickets in advance as it’s one of the best and biggest wine events we have all year. Our favorite is The Grand Tasting alone features more than 35 wineries and 75+ culinary/beverage partners. Yum.

2026 Texas Wine Month Passport

The passport can be a greta way to learn about and explore wineries you may have not known about. The limited-time program runs from October 1 – 31.

Bestfest

A local beer-based festival and an easy way to have some downtown fun on October 17.

Winery Events

Some wineries like host special events and tastings throughout the whole month of October so check out individual calendars to find the best hidden gem activities. Our favorites include a Texas Hill Country VS. Texas High Plains Tasting at Pebble Rock Cellars and the Mourvedre Paella Dinner at French Connection Wines.

Do I need a Wine Tour or Transportation?

We know every visitor has different trip goals, budgets and tastes. So we’ve broken down some basics to help you decide if booking a local service makes sense for your Fredericksburg visit.

Private Wine Tour

Best for someone who wants:

  • winery recommendations and local insight
  • someone else to plan the day
  • reservations handled
  • customized itinerary
  • a private experience
  • maximize their time

Private Transportation

Best for:

  • repeat visitors
  • people who already know where they want to go
  • wine club members
  • DIY travelers
  • people who just don’t want to drive (smart; DWIs are a real thing around here)

If you’re still unsure, that’s ok. We’re happy to help you make that decision so you’re not stuck “wingin it” after you arrive.
