What to Expect on a Fredericksburg Wine Tour: From Pickup to Last Pour
Never been on a wine tour before?
First, relax. You do not need to know your Cabernet from your Cinsault, and nobody is going to hand you a wine exam when you climb into the car.
A Fredericksburg wine tour should be easy. You show up, we handle the driving and logistics, and you spend the day drinking good Texas wine, eating something delicious and enjoying the Hill Country.
Here’s what a typical wine tour day actually looks like when you Ride with the Rat.

1. We pick you up where you’re staying
Your wine day starts with pickup at your Fredericksburg-area lodging.
No finding a parking spot downtown. No deciding who is going to be the designated driver. No trying to coordinate three cars and four different GPS routes.
Just get in, get comfortable and let us take it from there.
And of course, after a full day of tasting wine, we will drop you back off at your place or downtown dinner destination, if preferred.

2. Your guide helps set the tone for the day
One of the best parts of having a guide is that your day doesn’t have to feel like you’re following a checklist.
When we customize your itinerary, we want to know what you’re interested in.
Are you serious about wine? Brand new to Texas wine? Looking for beautiful scenery? More interested in small producers? Celebrating something? Want to learn a little without getting a lecture?
Tell us.
That’s how we help shape the experience.

3. You’ll typically visit three wineries
More isn’t necessarily better.
In our 12+ years of experience, three winery stops gives most guests enough time to taste, explore, take photos, learn something and actually enjoy themselves without spending the entire day watching the clock.
Trying to cram six or seven wineries into one day sounds impressive until you’re halfway through stop four wondering what day it is.
We want you to take home the best memories not the worst hangover.

4. Every winery experience is a little different
That’s part of the fun.
One stop might be a seated tasting where someone insightfully walks you through each wine. Another might have a beautiful patio or vineyard views. Another might be focused more heavily on the winemaking itself.
You don’t need to know exactly what you’re looking for before you arrive. That’s one of the reasons having a knowledgeable guide can make such a difference.
With Cellar Rat, you can expect to skip the gimmicky, tourist traps, and unfortunately, there are some.
And yes, you are absolutely allowed to ask questions.
Even the “Is this supposed to smell like that?” questions.
Especially those.

5. There’s more to the day than wine
A good wine tour isn’t just three tasting rooms back-to-back.
There’s time to enjoy and explore the property, browse the wines, take photos, relax and, importantly, eat.
A Cellar Rat Wine Tour includes lunch along the way. Because we customize itineraries, no lunch is the same. You won’t find us feeding you sad sacked lunches with a stale ham sandwich. Instead, we’ll order fresh brick oven pizzas from a winery, grab a hot panini from a local deli or we’ll indulge our senses with the Chef’s Table at William Chris Vineyards. If you have a specific craving, let us know and we’ll see what local options we have.

6. You don’t have to be a wine expert
This one is worth repeating.
You do not need to know anything about wine to enjoy a wine tour.
If you know exactly what you like, great. If you can only describe your favorite wine as “the one that doesn’t taste like a candle,” that’s fine too.
Our job is to help you discover what you enjoy, not make you feel like you need a vocabulary lesson before you can order a glass.

7. Your guide handles the driving and logistics
This might be the least glamorous part of the tour, but it’s one of the biggest benefits.
Fredericksburg wine country covers a lot of ground. Your guide handles the driving, winery routing, reservations and timing so your group can concentrate on the fun part.
And because you’re not driving between tastings, everyone in your group can participate in the experience.

8. You can buy wine along the way
Find something you love?
Buy it.
Most wineries have bottles available for purchase that aren’t available outside of their tasting rooms, and some guests end up bringing home considerably more Texas wine than they originally planned.
That’s why we have room for your purchases and we keep them at the proper temperatures, not cooking in Texas heat.

9. Eventually, we take you home
After your final stop, we get you back to where you started.
You don’t have to worry about navigating Highway 290 after a day of tasting. You don’t have to find a rideshare in the middle of wine country. You don’t have to remember where you parked.
You just have to decide where you’re having dinner.

So, what should you expect from a Fredericksburg wine tour?
Expect a relaxed day in Texas Wine Country.
Expect good wine, beautiful scenery, interesting people and plenty of opportunities to learn something new.
Expect your guide to handle the details.
Expect to skip the gimmicky, tourist traps.
Expect to be treated like VIPs since you are guests of Cellar Rat.
And most importantly, expect to enjoy the day without worrying about who’s driving.
That’s really the point.
You came to Fredericksburg to experience Texas Wine Country. Let someone else worry about getting you there and back.
