Things We Would Skip on a Fredericksburg Wine Weekend
If you only have 48 hours in Fredericksburg, you have a problem. Not a bad problem! A too-many-good-options problem.
There are wineries. Tasting rooms. Restaurants. Shops. Galleries. Live music. German food. Hill Country scenery. Long lunches. Pretty patios. Wine bars. Boutiques. And approximately 47 things someone on the internet will tell you that you absolutely, positively must do.
You could try to fit it all in. We wouldn’t.
As locals and spending years of driving guests around Fredericksburg and Texas Wine Country, we’ve learned that the best weekends aren’t necessarily the ones where you do the most. They’re the ones where you don’t spend half your weekend rushing around trying to do everything.
So if we had just 48 hours in Fredericksburg, here are a few things we’d skip. Not because they’re necessarily bad.
Because our time is limited, and we’d rather spend it somewhere better.
1. We’d Skip Trying to Visit as Many Wineries as Possible
This may be the hardest one for wine lovers to hear but this is an amateur move.
You do not get extra credit for visiting the most wineries.
A wine weekend can very quickly turn into:
Tasting. Drive.
Tasting. Drive.
Tasting. “Where are we having lunch?” Drive.
Tasting. Drive. “Wait, what winery was that?”
By the end of the day, you may have technically visited half the wine trail, but you’ll probably have very little memory of any of it and possibly one hell of a hangover the next day.
We’d rather visit three or four really good stops and actually enjoy them.
That gives you time to linger. Talk to the winemaker or tasting room staff. Buy a bottle. Take in the view. Eat lunch. And, most importantly, avoid feeling like you’re racing a stopwatch all day.
Wine country isn’t a scavenger hunt. You don’t have to collect tasting rooms.
2. We’d Skip Spending the Entire Weekend on Main Street
Yes, you should absolutely spend some time in downtown Fredericksburg.
It’s charming. It’s walkable. There are excellent restaurants, shops, galleries, wine bars and enough things to browse that you can easily lose an afternoon there.
But if you’re coming all the way to Fredericksburg for a wine weekend, we’d hate for you to spend your entire weekend on Main Street.
The Hill Country is kind of the point.
Drive the wine trail.
Sit on a winery patio.
Watch the landscape change.
Take the scenic route.
Then come back to town for dinner, drinks or shopping.
Fredericksburg works best when you treat downtown and wine country as two parts of the same trip, not as competing destinations.
3. We’d Skip Driving Yourselves After a Day of Tastings
This one isn’t sexy advice, but it’s arguably the most important.
If wine is the main event, don’t make driving the main event, too.
The logistics of wine country can look deceptively simple on a map. A handful of wineries may seem close together, but tasting appointments, traffic, lunch and the inevitable “Wait, let’s stop here for a minute” all add time.
And once you’ve spent the afternoon tasting, nobody wants to be the designated driver who gets to enjoy less of the experience.
If you’re planning a wine-heavy weekend, build your transportation into the plan from the beginning. That might mean a private wine tour, private transportation or another designated-driver option.
A DWI sucks as a souvenir. And yes, they aren’t hesitant to give those out around here. Plus, you know, everyone’s safety.
4. We’d Skip Choosing Wineries Solely Because They’re Famous
This is where we’re going to get a little opinionated.
A winery being famous doesn’t automatically mean it’s the right winery for you.
Fredericksburg has wineries that are known for their views. Others are known for their wines. Some are lively and social. Some are quiet and intimate. Some are great for learning. Some are better for a long lunch or an afternoon on the patio. Some are just a really good fit for your particular group.
And that’s what matters.
If you’re planning your first trip, don’t just make a list of the three wineries you’ve seen most often on Instagram.
Think about what kind of day you actually want to have.
Want serious wine? Beautiful scenery? A relaxed afternoon? Something lively? A place where you can linger?
Tell us that, and we’d much rather help you build a day around the experience you want than send you to the three most famous names.
Pro move: Lean on local insight and explore hidden gems.
5. We’d Skip Booking Every Meal Months in Advance
This may be controversial among the itinerary people. But hear us out.
Fredericksburg has some excellent restaurants, and there are definitely meals worth planning ahead for. In fact, some of the best restaurants around don’t offer reservations.
But if you schedule breakfast at 8:00, lunch at 12:00 and dinner at 6:00 six months before your trip, you’ve turned your vacation into a conference schedule.
Leave yourself some breathing room.
Maybe lunch takes longer than expected. Maybe you discover a winery you love and don’t want to leave. Maybe you decide you’d rather have a cocktail than rush across town for your reservation. Maybe you’re having such a good time that nobody wants to look at a clock.
That’s the beauty of a weekend away.
We’d make reservations for the meals that really matter to you and leave some space for spontaneity.
6. We’d Skip Treating Fredericksburg Like a Checklist
You don’t need to:
☑ Visit the Pacific War Museum
☑ Walk all of Main Street
☑ Go wine tasting
☑ Tour a distillery
☑ Visit every gallery
☑ Eat German food
☑ See a lavender farm
☑ Take the perfect Instagram photo
☑ Find every antique shop
☑ Visit every historical site
☑ Watch the sunset
☑ And somehow relax
You are allowed to just…be here.
Fredericksburg isn’t a theme park.
One of the best things you can do here is sit somewhere beautiful with a glass of wine and realize you don’t have anywhere else you need to be for the next two hours.
We’d take that over checking another attraction off a list.
7. We’d Skip Assuming Every Winery Is Basically the Same
This is another reason we don’t recommend picking wineries at random.
We always tell our guests that every winery has it’s own personality. A tasting room on the Highway 290 wine trail can be completely different from the one you visited 20 minutes earlier.
Different wines. Different atmosphere. Different architecture. Different views. Different pace. Different crowd. Different experience.
And that’s a good thing.
If every winery were just a tasting bar with six glasses lined up in front of you, wine country would get boring pretty quickly.
Instead, think of each winery as part of the overall experience you’re creating for the weekend.
Maybe your morning is relaxed and scenic. Your next stop is more focused on the wine. Lunch is leisurely. Your afternoon is a little livelier.
That’s a wine day we’d choose every time.
8. We’d Skip Overplanning Every Hour
There is such a thing as being too organized. And wine country is particularly bad at respecting a tightly scheduled itinerary.
A tasting might run long. Lunch might turn into a two-hour lunch. Someone wants to buy wine. Someone else wants to take more pictures. You discover a patio you don’t want to leave. You meet a winemaker and get caught up talking.
Good. That’s the stuff you’re supposed to be doing.
We’d rather see an itinerary with a little breathing room than one that requires everyone to leave a winery at exactly 2:17 p.m. to make the 2:45 tasting.
Plan the important pieces.
Leave room for the unexpected.
9. We’d Skip Driving Back and Forth Across Wine Country
This is one of those things you don’t necessarily realize until you’re actually here.
Your itinerary might look perfectly reasonable when you’re sitting at home looking at a map. Then you spend the day driving from one side of the area to the other. And back. And back again.
Suddenly, your relaxing wine weekend involves a lot more time in the vehicle than you expected.
Geography matters.
When you’re planning a wine day, we recommend thinking about where your stops are in relation to one another, not just whether you like each individual winery.
A great itinerary isn’t simply a list of great wineries.
It’s a list of great wineries that make sense together.
10. We’d Skip Trying to Do Wine Country AND Every Fredericksburg Attraction in One Weekend
This is the ultimate trap.
Saturday morning: wineries.
Saturday afternoon: shopping.
Saturday evening: dinner.
Sunday morning: breakfast.
Sunday afternoon: historical sites.
Also squeeze in a gallery.
And a distillery.
And maybe a hike.
And don’t forget the winery you couldn’t fit in Saturday.
By Sunday afternoon, you need a vacation from your vacation.
If wine is why you’re coming, let it be the focus.
You don’t have to see everything Fredericksburg has to offer in one trip. That’s what return visits are for.
And if wine isn’t actually the main reason you’re coming? That’s perfectly fine, too.
Just don’t try to cram two completely different vacations into 48 hours.
So What Would We Do Instead?
If we had one weekend in Fredericksburg, we’d keep it pretty simple.
We’d choose a few wineries that actually fit our tastes.
We’d build the day around geography instead of trying to crisscross the Hill Country.
We’d leave enough time to sit down for lunch.
We’d spend some time in downtown Fredericksburg but not all of it.
We’d make one or two reservations that really mattered and leave the rest of the weekend flexible.
And we’d make sure nobody in the group had to spend the afternoon worrying about who’s driving.
Most of all, we’d resist the urge to make the weekend perfect.
Perfect is overrated.
A really good glass of Texas wine, a beautiful Hill Country afternoon, a great meal and nowhere you have to be for a couple of hours?
That’s a pretty good weekend.
Your Fredericksburg Weekend Doesn’t Need to Be Complicated
If you’ve only got 48 hours, our best advice is simple: Do less. Enjoy it more.
Choose experiences that fit your group instead of chasing someone else’s list of must-dos. And if you’re planning a wine day, don’t hesitate to ask someone who spends their days doing exactly that.
