If you’re planning a Fredericksburg wine-country getaway with your four-legged travel companion, there’s one thing you should know before you arrive: Cellar Rat tours and vehicles are pet-free.
But don’t cancel the trip!
Fredericksburg is surprisingly accommodating to dogs, and with a little advance planning, you can enjoy wine, good food, beer, shopping and the Texas Hill Country without leaving your best friend stuck in the hotel room all weekend.
We recently had some guests that brought their bestie with them and were still searching for places they could all hangout together. We didn’t want to miss advising them where to go and we quickly realized there wasn’t a great source of this info online… so we created our own guide.

Dog-Friendly Wineries in Fredericksburg: What You Need to Know
Dog-friendly doesn’t always mean “your dog can sit next to you at the tasting bar.”
Many wineries welcome dogs on patios and lawns but restrict them from indoor tasting areas. So before you schedule your tasting, make sure they have an outdoor option. Otherwise, consider ordering glasses or a bottle. You can even see if they’ll offer you a self-guided flight you can enjoy in their outdoor space if you’re set on tasting through their menu.

- Good to know: They specifically offer a Paws on the Patio experience.

- Dog policy: Their own site includes a guest testimonial specifically describing the property as dog-friendly, and the winery has substantial outdoor patio/deck space with a great view.
- Good to know: They are conveniently located fairly close to the Main Street area.

- Dog policy: Friendly, leashed pets are welcome on their covered patio. The property has a lot of space for running around too.
- Good to know: This is where you can get quality wines and bring your pet.

- Location: Stonewall
- Dog policy: Dog-friendly. They also have dog-specific events such as Woof Fest. Dogs must be leashed at those events.
- Good to know: They have vineyard dogs behind fences. If your pet isn’t friendly, this might not be the spot for you.

- Dog policy: Pet-friendly with lots of covered patio seating.
- Good to know: This is an excellent choice if you’re seeking views, wine and tasty food.

- Good to know: Laid back and very pet friendly.

- Pecan Grove Store – A historic ice house and beer garden, Pecan Grove Store, cooks up ‘Dino’ burgers, tacos and other favorites Thursday through Sunday. The outdoor restaurant has plenty of picnic tables and room for you and your pet to spread out. Live music is played weekly.
- Munch Food Truck Park – home to a wide selection of food trucks (Mexican food, traditional American food, Vegetarian and shaved ice), a beer and wine bar, live music and a kid’s playground.

Things to Do With Your Dog Besides Drink Wine
If you’re looking for a break from booze, believe it or not, there are other activities in Fredericksburg. Here are a few that are just for you and your pup.
Fredericksburg Dog Park
The park provides plenty of shade, water, ample seating and room for dogs to run, wag and sniff. There are designated areas for small dogs (under 25 pounds) and large dogs (over 25 pounds) and is perfect spot for both canines and their owners to get sun, socialization and exercise.
Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park
Grab your pet and some water and head out to Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park to enjoy 10-plus acres of natural landscape. Talk a walk around the one-mile walking trail along Live Oak Creek. Free admission!
Cross Mountain
A Cellar Rat downtown favorite! Take in the beautiful Texas Hill Country views with a short walk up Cross Mountain. The historic hill features views for miles, walking trails and a picnic area. During the founding of Fredericksburg, a timber cross was found on the historic hill top, previously used as a lookout point.
Enchanted Rock
This is the most popular hiking destination in our area, and for good reason. To protect the natural area, pets are only permitted on the Loop Trail at Enchanted Rock. Dogs are not permitted on the Summit Trail, the trail leading to the top of Enchanted Rock.

What If You Want to Go Somewhere Dogs Aren’t Allowed?
The Dog Pause at Dogologie
The Dog Pause provides supervised short-term crate space with mats, bottled water, video surveillance and soothing sounds. Dogs can stay for up to four hours before a required break, with accommodations for dogs up to 100 pounds.
Pro Tip: Call ahead, confirm availability and understand their requirements.

Fredericksburg has plenty of pet-friendly lodging, but “pet-friendly” can mean very different things from one property to another.

Friday
Arrive → check into pet-friendly lodging → Main Street stroll → dog-friendly dinner → wine or cocktails outside.

Morning dog walk → dog-friendly winery stops → lunch on a patio → afternoon winery → Dog Pause if there’s a specific stop your dog can’t attend → dinner.
Sunday
Coffee/breakfast → Dog Park → Cross Mountain or another outdoor activity → one final winery/patio stop → head home.
One Very Important Texas Wine Country Dog Tip
Texas Wine Country is beautiful. It is also hot.
A “dog-friendly” patio isn’t necessarily a good place for your dog at 2 p.m. in August. You probably don’t need these pet-care reminders but just in case:
- Bring water
- Ask about shaded spots
- Check pavement temperatures
- Avoid leaving dogs in vehicles
- Don’t assume every winery has water bowls
- Consider morning/evening outdoor activities during hot weather
- Have an indoor/backup plan

If you’re traveling with your dog, we recommend making your pet plans before booking your wine day. The good news is that Fredericksburg has enough dog-friendly options that your pup can still have a pretty great vacation.

Is Fredericksburg, Texas dog-friendly?
Yes. Fredericksburg and the surrounding Texas Hill Country have quite a few places that welcome dogs, including wineries, restaurants with outdoor seating, breweries, parks and pet-friendly lodging. The important thing to remember is that “pet-friendly” doesn’t always mean dogs are welcome everywhere on the property. Many wineries and restaurants allow dogs outdoors but not inside, so it’s always worth checking the current policy before you go.
Can I bring my dog to Fredericksburg wineries?
You can bring your dog to some Fredericksburg-area wineries, but policies vary. Many welcome well-behaved, leashed dogs on patios, lawns or other outdoor areas, while restricting dogs from indoor tasting rooms.
For example, William Chris Vineyards welcomes dogs outdoors but does not allow them inside the tasting room, while Pedernales Cellars allows leashed dogs on its deck and lawn but not inside the tasting room or production facility.
Our best advice? Don’t assume that a winery’s “pet-friendly” designation means your dog can join you everywhere. Check the winery’s current policy before you go.
Are dogs allowed inside Fredericksburg wineries?
Usually, no. Most of the dog-friendly wineries around Fredericksburg welcome dogs primarily in outdoor areas, such as patios, lawns and decks. Individual policies vary, and some wineries may have additional restrictions during special events or busy weekends.
If being able to sit indoors with your dog is important to your trip, call ahead rather than assuming.
Are there dog-friendly restaurants in Fredericksburg?
Yes. Several Fredericksburg restaurants and beer gardens offer outdoor seating where dogs are welcome. Downtown patios and biergartens can be particularly convenient if you’re staying near Main Street.
As with wineries, “dog-friendly” generally means outdoor seating rather than the indoor dining room. Bring a leash and check the restaurant’s current policy before you arrive.
Where can my dog run or get some exercise in Fredericksburg?
The Fredericksburg Dog Park at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park is one option for letting your dog burn off some energy. The municipal park also offers walking opportunities.
For a longer outdoor adventure, the area has several trails and parks where leashed dogs are permitted. Always check the specific property’s current pet and leash rules before heading out, particularly during hot weather.
Can I take my dog to Enchanted Rock?
Dogs are allowed in some areas of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, but they are not permitted on the Summit Trail. If you’re planning to visit with your dog, check the current Texas Parks & Wildlife rules before you go and plan your hike accordingly.
Also keep the Texas heat in mind. The exposed granite and lack of shade can make a Hill Country hike much harder on dogs than it may appear.
What if I want to visit a place that doesn’t allow dogs?
Plan ahead. One local option is The Dog Pause at Dogologie in downtown Fredericksburg, which offers short-term supervised care for dogs. This can be especially useful if there is a winery, restaurant or other attraction you’d like to visit that doesn’t allow pets.
We recommend contacting them in advance to confirm availability, requirements and current hours.
What if I need medical care for my pet while I’m visiting Fredericksburg?
Hopefully you won’t need it, but it’s a good idea to know where to turn before you arrive.
Fredericksburg has several veterinary clinics that provide routine and urgent veterinary care. Compassionate Care Veterinary Hospital is located in Fredericksburg and provides veterinary care for companion animals. Its regular hospital hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the practice directs after-hours emergencies to Hill Country Animal Emergency Hospital at 830-510-3338.
Friendship Veterinary Center is another local veterinary practice and specifically asks pet owners with an emergency to call 830-997-9946 immediately.
If your pet is experiencing a serious or potentially life-threatening emergency, don’t wait for a routine appointment. Call a veterinary hospital for instructions or seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
Cellar Rat tip: Save your pet’s veterinarian’s phone number and your pet’s medical records on your phone before leaving home. If your dog takes medication or has a medical condition, bring the medication and a list of current medications with you. A little preparation is much easier than trying to track everything down in the middle of a vacation emergency.
Can I bring my dog on a Cellar Rat wine tour?
Unfortunately, no. We love dogs, but pets aren’t permitted on Cellar Rat tours or in our tour vehicles.
If you’re traveling with your dog, we recommend making arrangements for your pup before your wine-tour day. The good news is that Fredericksburg has plenty of ways to make the rest of your trip dog-friendly.
