Is Texas Wine Underrated? Let’s Talk About It

Texas is now among the top wine-producing states in the US, but it still fights outdated assumptions. If you’ve ever questioned whether Texas wine is “real wine,” you’re not alone and you’re not right, either.

At Cellar Rat Wine Tours, we hear the same misconceptions again and again from visitors who leave pleasantly surprised. So we’re setting the record straight and bust some myths.

Myth #1: Texas Wine Can’t Compete with California or Europe

The Truth: It already does.

Texas wines regularly earn top scores from respected critics and wine competitions. Varietals like Tempranillo, Mourvèdre, and Viognier thrive in Texas soil and climate. The key difference? Smaller producers mean less distribution so to try some of the best you have to come here to taste it.

Myth #2: It’s Too Hot in Texas to Grow Good Grapes

The Truth: Heat is a challenge, not a dealbreaker.

The Texas High Plains and Hill Country both offer microclimates ideal for growing warm-climate grapes. Elevation, limestone soil, and careful vineyard management help Texas vintners craft balanced wines with structure and depth. Think Spain, not Sonoma.

Myth #3: Texas Only Makes Sweet Wine

The Truth: Not even close.

Yes, some wineries offer sweet wines to appeal to casual drinkers but Texas wine country is home to bold reds, complex whites, crisp rosés, and some new serious sparkling wines. Whether you’re into bone-dry Albariño or full-bodied Syrah, you’ll find a fit here.

Myth #4: There Aren’t Any Real Winemakers in Texas

The Truth: Many of them trained in California or Europe.

Texas winemakers include UC Davis grads, former Napa vintners, and locals trained under master growers. It’s not uncommon to hear French or Italian influence in the cellar especially in Hye and Fredericksburg, where winemaking talent runs deep.

Myth #5: You Don’t Need a Tour, You Can Just Wing It

The Truth: You’ll miss the best stuff.

Some of the most exceptional wineries in Texas are appointment-only or off the beaten path. Without a tour guide, you’ll miss small-batch producers, scenic backroads, and curated tasting experiences. That’s where Cellar Rat comes in.
