Texas Wine Education FAQs

WHAT MAKES TEXAS WINE DIFFERENT THAN NAPA?

Texas wine differs from Napa wine because Texas has a warmer climate, higher elevations, and more diverse growing regions. While Napa Valley is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, Texas wineries often specialize in Mediterranean and Rhône grape varieties like Tempranillo, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Viognier that perform exceptionally well in hot, dry climates.

Texas vineyards also experience dramatic day-to-night temperature shifts, especially in the Texas High Plains, which helps grapes retain acidity while developing bold fruit flavors. The result is a wine style that is expressive, food-friendly, and uniquely tied to Texas terroir rather than modeled after California wines.

More facts:

WHAT GRAPES GROW BEST IN TEXAS?

The best grapes for Texas wine production are warm-climate varieties that can thrive in heat, sun exposure, and periods of drought. Texas winemakers have found particular success with Mediterranean and Spanish grape varieties that naturally adapt to the state’s growing conditions.

In Texas you’ll see these yummy varietals on many winery menus:

  • Tempranillo
  • Mourvèdre
  • Viognier
  • Sangiovese
  • Tannat

WHAT IS TEXAS TERRIOR?

Texas terroir refers to the unique combination of soil, climate, elevation, and geography that influences how Texas wine tastes. Because Texas is geographically large and environmentally diverse, each wine-growing region produces wines with distinct characteristics.

The Texas High Plains feature high elevations, sandy soils, and cooler nighttime temperatures, while the Texas Hill Country is known for limestone-rich soils and rolling terrain. These regional differences shape grape development, acidity, minerality, and flavor profiles in Texas wines.

CAN I HAVE MY WINE SHIPPED OUT OF STATE?

In many cases, yes. Texas wineries can legally ship wine directly to consumers in numerous U.S. states. However, wine shipping laws vary by state and may include restrictions related to quantity limits, delivery requirements, or permit regulations.

Pro Tip: If you’re unsure, ask the winery to provide shipping eligibility information. They’ll know and will be able to setup on your behalf.

CAN I ORDER TEXAS WINE ONLINE?

Yes. Many Texas wineries offer online wine ordering through their websites.

Availability depends on state shipping laws, but most wineries make the ordering and compliance process simple during checkout.
